In order to be fully accepted by the Fremen, Paul needs to prove that he can mount one and guide its direction - no small task considering the creature's size and the surrounding seismic events triggered by its passage. The worm ride constitutes another big step. The first movie ends with Paul defeating the Freman Jamis in one-on-one combat: the first sign that he's capable of joining them.
Before that happens, however, Paul must demonstrate mastery of their ways. The Fremen eventually form the backbone of his army, and he becomes a spiritual and political leader. He and Lady Jessica are on the run from the Harkonnens and in dire peril when they come across the locals. Paul's connection to the Fremen is tenuous at first, as Villeneuve's first Dune movie demonstrates.
