

As the quote points out, the new regime took over gradually without anyone noticing and former US citizens now find themselves in a totalitarian society which is structured hierarchically with women divided into different categories depending on their age and most importantly their fertility. The novel tells the story of Offred, a Handmaid in the state of Gilead which has replaced the United States of America.
